Nonconforming Finite Element Methods for the Equations of Linear Elasticity

چکیده
In the adaptation of nonconforming finite element methods to the equations of elasticity with traction boundary conditions, the main difficulty in the analysis is to prove that an appropriate discrete version of Korn's second inequality is valid. Such a result is shown to hold for nonconforming piecewise quadratic and cubic finite elements and to be false for nonconforming piecewise linears. Optimal-order error estimates, uniform for Poisson ratio i^6[0, 1/2), are then derived for the corresponding P2 and P¿ methods. This contrasts with the use of C finite elements, where there is a deterioration in the convergence rate as v —► 1/2 for piecewise polynomials of degree < 3 . Modifications of the continuous methods and the nonconforming linear method which also give uniform optimal-order error estimates are discussed.

In this study, we present a numerical solution for the two-phase incompressible flow in the porous media under isothermal condition using a hybrid of the linear lower-order nonconforming finite element and the interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method. This hybridization is developed for the first time in the two-phase modeling and considered as the main novelty of this research. The p...
متن کاملOn Nonconforming Linear–constant Elements for Some Variants of the Stokes Equations
The use of nonconforming piecewise linear finite elements for the velocity field and piecewise constant finite elements for the pressure fields, as suggested by Crouzeix and Raviart, gives a simple stable, optimal order approximation to the Stokes equations. As is well-known, however, this method is not stable for the very similar system describing the deformation of an incompressible linearly ...
متن کاملA Mixed Nonconforming Finite Element for Linear Elasticity
This article considers a mixed finite element method for linear elasticity. It is based on a modified mixed formulation that enforces the continuity of the stress weakly by adding a jump term of the approximated stress on interior edges. The symmetric stress are approximated by nonconforming linear elements and the displacement by piecewise constants. We establish (h) error bound in the (broken...

متن کاملNonconforming Tetrahedral Mixed Finite Elements for Elasticity
This paper presents a nonconforming finite element approximation of the space of symmetric tensors with square integrable divergence, on tetrahedral meshes. Used for stress approximation together with the full space of piecewise linear vector fields for displacement, this gives a stable mixed finite element method which is shown to be linearly convergent for both the stress and displacement, an...
